Résidences d'écriture de la Fondation Jan Michalski
Située en pleine nature, au pied du Jura vaudois, en Suisse, la Fondation Jan Michalski pour l’écriture et la littérature a été créée à l’initiative de Vera Michalski-Hoffmann en mémoire de son époux, afin de perpétuer leur engagement commun envers les acteurs de l’écrit.
Sa mission est de favoriser la création littéraire et d’encourager le goût de lire à travers diverses actions et activités.
La Fondation Jan Michalski propose ainsi une vaste bibliothèque multilingue de plus de 65'000 ouvrages, ouverte à tous, trois expositions thématiques chaque année, des rencontres culturelles, un prix annuel de littérature mondiale, des soutiens financiers octroyés à des projets littéraires et, depuis le printemps 2017, des résidences d’écriture. Un ensemble original de sept modules d’habitations, suspendues à la canopée ajourée abritant la Fondation et appelées « cabanes », accueille des auteurs du monde entier, novices ou confirmés, pour des séjours de durée variable, allant de deux semaines à six mois.
Pensée comme une petite cité à l’abri d’une canopée, la Fondation Jan Michalski offre un lieu de rencontres unique, tourné sur le monde, où se mêlent écrivains, artistes et public.
Ouverture des candidatures pour la session 2020
La Fondation Jan Michalski ouvre les candidatures pour ses résidences d’écriture 2020 jusqu’au 15 septembre 2019. Les dossiers seront examinés par la commission de sélection au mois d’octobre 2019, et les résidents sélectionnés accueillis entre février et décembre 2020.
Délibérément ouvertes à tout type d’écriture, les résidences accueillent en priorité écrivains et traducteurs mais restent accessibles à d’autres disciplines où l’écriture serait au centre du projet. En 2020, un pourcentage des résidences sera réservé au nature writing, une forme de fiction ou de non-fiction créative qui sensibilise à la nature, prépare à un mode de vie durable, et aide à comprendre de façon profonde les interconnections socio-environnementales et les conséquences des actions humaines sur la nature. Les séjours peuvent être effectués individuellement ou en binôme.
La Fondation prend en charge le voyage aller-retour des résidents sélectionnés et leur alloue une bourse d’écriture de 1200 CHF par mois. Les résidents ont aussi la possibilité de participer aux activités culturelles organisées par la Fondation Jan Michalski.

Surrounded by nature at the foot of the Jura mountains in Switzerland, the Jan Michalski Foundation for Writing and Literature was created by Vera Michalski in memory of her husband to perpetuate their common commitment to those who devote themselves to the written word.
The mission of the Jan Michalski Foundation is to foster literary creation and encourage the practice of reading through a range of initiatives and activities.
It proposes a vast, public library with more than 60,000 works of literature, three themed expositions per year, cultural events, an annual prize in world literature, financial support for literary projects and, since Spring 2017, a writer-in-residence program. An original group of seven housing units, called “treehouses,” are suspended from the lattice canopy roof of the Foundation and hosts beginning and well-established authors from all over the world, for residency periods ranging from two weeks to five consecutive months.
Conceived as a small community sheltered beneath a canopy and turned toward the world at large, the Jan Michalski Foundation offers a unique place of encounter, a place where writers, artists, and the public come together.
Jan Michalski Foundation writing residences: applications now open for the 2020 session
We are pleased to inform you that applications for the residences 2020 are open until 15 September 2019. A committee of experts will preside over the applications and choose the future residents during the month of October 2019. The selected candidates will be welcomed between February and December 2020.
Residences are open to all types of writing. Priority is given to writers and translators but the residences are open to other disciplines where writing is at the heart of the project. In 2020, a percentage of the residences will be dedicated to nature writing, a form of fiction or creative non-fiction that raises awareness of nature, prepares for a sustainable way of living, and helps to better understand socio-environmental interconnections and the impact of human actions on nature. Residencies can be granted for individual projects or projects in pairs.
The Foundation covers residents’ travel costs to and from home and grants a monthly stipend of CHF 1200. Residents can also participate in cultural activities organized by the Foundation.
