PhD position (Literary Studies)

Deadline: Aug 02, 2018 14:09

Department: LW07 - Department of Literary Studies, Ghent University

Contract: Limited duration (4 years)

Degree: MA (or equivalent)

Occupancy rate: 100%

DESCRIPTION

Owing to their visual essence and status as a popular, modern medium, comics–newspaper strips, comics magazines and graphic novels–provide valuable insight into the transformation of collective consciousness. Taking this as its starting point, the COMICS project, funded by a five-year ERC Starting Grant, seeks to construct a first intercultural history of children in European comics, tracing the changing conceptualizations of child protagonists in popular comics for both children and adults from the mid-19th century to the present. In doing so, it takes key points in European history as well as the history of comics into account. Combining comics studies and childhood studies the project incorporates specific insights from cultural studies (history of family life, history of public life, history of the body, affect theory and scholarship on the carnivalesque) to examine the different and changing roles played by children in comics.

PROFILE

The PhD candidate is expected to work on child characters in French-language and/or British comics magazines (Tintin, Spirou, The Beano, The Dandy) from their inception in 1930s until the end of the Second World War. A keen interest in comics and a basic knowledge of comics studies and/or childhood studies is essential. The candidate will also be expected to actively participate in the COMICS team’s collective activities, including internal meetings, lecture series and conferences.

This 4-year job will start on October 1, 2018.

It offers a competitive salary with social security contributions
