MARYLIN: PAR DELÀ LA BEAUTÉ

Ta beauté survivante du monde antique,

                                                                      réclamée par le monde futur,

                                                                     possédée par le monde présent,

                                                                             devint un mal mortel.

                                                                                       (Pier Paolo Pasolini, La Rage)

MARYLIN: BEYOND THE BEAUTY

La tua bellezza sopravvissuta dal mondo antico,

richiesta dal mondo futuro,

posseduta dal mondo presente,

divenne un male mortale.

(Pier Paolo Pasolini, La rabbia)

The name of Marylin Monroe is the name of a woman, an actress, a character. Even at a more general level an entire season of the history of world cinema, a season that marks the transition from the golden age of Hollywood to its crisis, could perhaps be traced back to that name. An epic that simultaneously runs in parallel with the diva phenomenon and finds its most effective exemplification in the name of Marilyn. If the functioning of the productive machine has been founded by Hollywood on the construction of a real "star system”, at least as long as it was the largest "dream factory" in the world, the name of Marylin, with all its enormous contradictions, embodies he name of an entire "cultural industry", based on rules almost impossible to be broken.

The name of Marylin - interpreted both as a proper and a common name - becomes one of the names through which it seems possible to decline the issue of the destituent power. Since the figure of Marylin expresses much more than her own unrepeatable singularity; how is it possible that it has become a figure of "destitution"? This is the question to which the second issue of "K." would like to answer, starting from the inspiring words contained in the famous poetic text that Pier Paolo Pasolini includes into one of the most touching passage of La rabbia (1963). It is from there that we would ideally like to start. We would like to start from the profoundness through which Pasolini reads the suicide of Marylin, as the radical and extreme gesture through which she would claim her own pure and different beauty for herself, representing quite the opposite of the beauty of the Hollywood actress: the only one the world can see and manage.

Through her death, Marylin removes her beauty from the productive system and frustrates the libidinal desire of the men and women who had loved, imitated and dreamed of her, everywhere in the world. It is perhaps this gesture of subtraction that makes Marilyn a destituent figure capable of using her own body, beyond any explicit will, as the political instrument to trigger a crisis throughout an entire system of economic and cultural values. Death is nothing but the extreme outcome of this destituent power incarnated by the body of the actress, both when she embodied the image of an explosive and uncontainable vitality, and when she wanted to shrink in a corpse, concealed at the sight of an immense community of mourning spectators, by putting in place a movement which is basically equal and opposite to the one that had made her body an on-display object.

This is how Marylin puts in check an entire system that had sacrificed the woman in favour of the star: with her own death she breaks the working of a dispositive based on the stereotyping and on the commodification of her fatal beauty. It is indeed the entire personal and artistic story of Marylin to suggest a reading of her life in a political key: the arrival in Hollywood as a redemption from a poor and unhappy childhood; the profuse commitment in the construction of an actor mask that is as invincible as it is suffocating; the subsequent attempt to break away from the strict rules of the entertainment industry; the controversial relationship with power; the brief imprisonment in a psychiatric hospital; the suicide.

The figure of Marylin puts into question the issue of the “destitution”, starting from a lump of matters that can gathered into a more general series of research hints such as:

The use of the body considered into the perspective of what we can define, as Debord claims, the “Society of the spectacle”. The commodification of the beauty as an exchange value and commodity. The actor practice and gesture: the case of Marylin - often simply considered as a silly blond doll and not as a talented actress- is the opportunity for investigating the work of the actor (the identification with the character, the voluntary act and automatism of the gesture, the short-circuiting of the language and its meanings). This also offers the possibility to re-articulate, within the perspective of the destituent, the reflection of those intellectuals (from Kleist to Craig, from Mejerchol’d to Artaud, till Bresson) who have thought about the body of the actor beyond any organicist attempt, by going over the primate of the will in favour of the automatism of the gesture and the word. The Star System and the Hollywood film industry: the artistic parabola of Marylin – as a comedian, producer and, finally, as a dramatic actress in the movie The Misfits (Huston, 1961) – makes it possible to read back an entire page of the history of the cinema, going through the construction of recognizable genres, the standardization of the filmic product and the consequent recognisability of it by a loyal audience, until the progressive (starting from the Sixties) challenging of an entire system of production. From here, it is possible to think back on all those reflections (from Kracauer to Simmel, from Adorno to Bene, not to mention Debord) that inquired the paradoxes and the ambiguity of the so called “cultural industry”.

MARYLIN: OLTRE LA BELLEZZA

La tua bellezza sopravvissuta dal mondo antico,

richiesta dal mondo futuro,

posseduta dal mondo presente,

divenne un male mortale.

(Pier Paolo Pasolini, La rabbia)
