French Graduate Studies at the University of South Carolina

The French Program in the Department of Languages, Literatures & Cultures at the University of South Carolina is currently accepting applications for its MA and MAT in French, PhD in Comparative Literature and PhD in Linguistics with an array of funding opportunities.

Degree Programs  

The French Program provides the opportunity to participate in the intellectual and social life of a vibrant department while obtaining an advanced degree. Students will work with renowned scholars to experience firsthand how new ideas are created through the research process. They may pursue the MA in French or MAT in French and the PhD in Comparative Literature with a focus on French literature or the PhD in Linguistics with a focus on French linguistics. The faculty in French possess expertise in applied linguistics, Atlantic & Caribbean studies, children’s literature, cultural history, digital humanities, film studies, historical linguistics, linguistics, literary theory, sociolinguistics, theatre, translation studies, travel literature and women’s & gender studies.

Financial Support

Graduate assistantships are available for students admitted to graduate degree programs on the basis of merit and availability. All graduate assistants undergo training in order to prepare them to teach beginning French courses, tutor and lead extracurricular activities. Fellowships are available through the Graduate School. Graduate students may apply for financial support to attend academic conferences.

Professionalization Activities

The French Program and the Department of Languages, Literatures & Cultures offer a wide range of professionalization opportunities, including the French House and French Club, French Day, a Tutoring Center, the French Literature Series & Conference, Les Comédiens Carolingiens, a French film festival (Cinécola), study abroad, several awards, as well as a Graduate Organization and Conference.

100% of our recent graduates have been placed in teaching positions in secondary schools, colleges and universities, both nationally and internationally.
