Appel à contributions - Numéro spécial de L'Esprit créateur, vol. 58, no 4, 2018

"French and Beat Literatures: A History of Mutual Appropriation, Reception and Translation", sous la direction de Véronique Lane (Lancaster University)

Call for article proposals: special issue of L'Esprit Créateur, vol. 58, no. 4, 2018

"French and Beat Literatures: A History of Mutual Appropriation, Reception and Translation," guest edited by Véronique Lane (Lancaster University)

Building on the recent “transnational turn” in the field of Beat Studies but going beyond the American-centric nature of that turn, this special issue will explore the biculturalism that so distinctively informed Beat writing, from its emergence in 1940s New York to its major authors’ sojourn at the so-called Beat Hotel in 1950s and 1960s Paris. It will combine archival, historical, intertextual and theoretical approaches to demonstrate the material presence of French literature within the works of known and lesser known Beat writers as well as to reassess the reception and impact of Beat literature within French and Francophone cultures.

Article proposals with a theoretical approach, or focusing on the impact of Beat literature within French and Francophone cultures, are especially welcome.

Abstracts of 300 words in either French or English and a short bio-bibliography should be sent to Véronique Lane (veronique.lane@lancaster.ac.uk) by 15 December 2017. The deadline for completed articles of 6000 words, including endnotes, will be 15 May 2018.
